Extreme Wakeboarding [PS2 – Cancelled]

Extreme Wakeboarding is a cancelled sport game that was in development in 2002 by Wild Child Studios for the Playstation 2. As we can read on Wikipedia, Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. The rider is usually towed behind a motorboat and the sport was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques. The gameplay would have been probably similar to the Tony Hawks’ skateboard games, but “on rails” as the player needs to follow the motorboat.

Extreme Wakeboarding was never released, maybe because Wild Child Studios did not find a publisher interested in the project. Sometime later the studio had to close down. Another wakeboarding game, Stomped Wakeboarding, was in development by Indie Built (aka Microsoft’s Salt Lake Games Studio) for the XBOX, but it was cancelled too.

I:5 (Insomniac) [PS2 – Cancelled]

Codename I:5 (aka “Girl with a stick”) is a cancelled game that was in development by Insomniac Games, between Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000) and Ratchet & Clank (2002). As the name of the project suggests, it was going to be the 5th game from Insomniac studio, but after some time they decided to stop the works on it, as it was not much fun to play. I:5 was never officially announced, but  they talked about it in one of their “The Full Moon Show” video podcasts, in which they even shown some footage of the prototype. The game was meant to be an action adventure / RPG, inspired by Zelda / Tomb Raider, in wich the main character was a girl with a stick as a weapon and magic powers, exploring a fantasy /prehistoric world. Huge props to Insomniac for sharing some info on their lost game!

Melty Blood: Actress Again [Arcade PS2 – Beta / Unused]

Melty Blood is a visual novel and fighting game, co-developed by dōjin circles Type-Moon and French-Bread, originally released at Comiket on December 2002. Melty Blood: Actress Again, is the third game in the Melty Blood series, released in 2008 on Sega Naomi hardware and the year later on the Playstation 2. Megalol found a removed playable character in the PS2 version and some beta differences, as he wrote in our forum:

It’s interesting, I found this character by using “ArtMoney” and “PCSX2 emulator”. Her name is Powered Ciel, unfortunately the game does not start after selecting her (i think that the developers planned to use Powered Ciel as a playable character, but she was removed at the last moment)

also in the characters-select screen, one of the portraits is the icon of Powered Ciel

In the final screen of “nero chaos arcade mode” you can see Powered Ciel

in an old picture from a magazine, we can see the beta “character select screen” from the arcade version, but “akiha” has a different icon, the icon that will be used in “school form akiha” only a year later in the PS2 version.

Powerd Ciel has been confirmed to be a fully-playable character in the newest Melty Blood revision, dubbed Melty Blood Actress Again: Current Code. The video below shows her in action:

If you have more info about this lost character, please let us know!

Trigun: The Planet Gunsmoke [PS2 – Cancelled]

Trigun: The Planet Gunsmoke is a cancelled action game / third person shooter based on the manga / anime with the same name, that was in development by Red Entertainment for the Playstation 2.  The project was unveiled in 2002 in Sega’s 2002 GameJam video. The unveiling consisted of a 20 second clip from the game, with multiple characters from the Trigun series. Since its unveiling, no word on development had come out by its developer Red Entertainment or publisher Sega. After so many years, it’s clear that the game will never be released.

Red Entertainment also worked on Gungrave, a third person shooter heavily influenced by anime series and published by Sega in July 2002 in Japan, September 2002 in USA and November 2002 in Europe. If it would have been released, it’s possible that Trigun: The Planet Gunsmoke’s gameplay would have been much similar to Gungrave. Gungrave even had the same character designs by Trigun’s series creator Yasuhiro Nightow.
