Rise to Honor 2 [PS2 – Cancelled]

Jet Li: Rise to Honor is a beat ’em up released in 2004 for the PlayStation 2. The game features the likeness, voice acting and motion capture work of martial arts actor Jet Li, and features martial arts choreography by Corey Yuen.  [Info from Wikipedia] In 2005 SCEA were working on a sequel, but the project was later cancelled, maybe because of low sales of the first one.

Flower, Sun & Rain [PS2 – Beta / Concept]

fsrlogo

Flower, Sun, and Rain is a game developed by Goichi Suda and Grasshopper Manufacture: the game was originally released in Japan on the PlayStation 2  in 2001 with an enhanced Nintendo DS port that was released in Japan / Europe in 2008 and it’s scheduled to be released in USA in June 2009. FSR is  one of the weirdest, crazier, nonsensical and wonderful adventure games  ever, with a story that it’s like a mix between a David Lynch film, an episode of Lost and your favourite (or worst) mathematical problems from elementary school. You know, the usual Suda 51 storytelling style that we all love.

In early target renders / concept arts from the PS2 version we can see some interesting beta differences:

  • Sumio used a different kind of car.
  • Kusabi (the girl) never shows herself in a car-scene like this one.
  • The characters have a weird design, different from the final version.
  • There’s an unknown scene with 2 characters (Yoshimitsu Koshimizu and Remy Fawzil) that was never used in the final game. Also, the place does not look like any know area. In this picture the HUD looks like the one from the Silver Case games.
  • In general, these target renders don’t look like the final game.

Turok Evolution Sequel [XBOX/PS2/GC – Concept]

The original Turok: Evolution is a FPS developed and published by Acclaim Entertainment for the GameCube, PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2002. After Evolution, a small Acclaim team was trying to work on a direct sequel, but the project never got off the ground so they soon moved on to other projects. Only few artworks remain from this Turok Evolution sequel that never was. When Acclaim was closed, Turok vanished from the gaming scene untill when Disney Interactive Studios purchased the rights to the Turok franchise. Propaganda Games developed the next Turok, that was released for XBOX 360 and Playstation 3 in 2008.

Ghostworld [PS2 – Cancelled]

Ghostworld was a platform / adventure game somewhat similar to Psychonauts, that was in development for the Playstation 2 by Luxoflux, in mid-2000. The project started with a “dark” and unique theme, but then i was changed to a more “kid-friendly” game for younger audience, because the publisher tough that so it was going to be more profitable. In the end (2002) Ghostworld was cancelled as it was seen as a risky project.  After this, part of the team started to work on Shrek 2: The Game.

“A bunch of very talented people have invested tremendous effort into it, and while the results were spectacular and generally everybody was very impressed, reality kicked in. Being an original, “non-proven” property the publisher took an extremely non-committing stance and the soon-to-follow constant changes of direction and target-audience, design-by-committee meetings and the vague atmosphere surrounding the fate of the game had completely extinguished the original spark and eventually led to abandon the project.”
