Popcorn (Short Fuses) [PSX – Cancelled]

Popcorn is a cancelled action adventure game that was in development by Eighth Wonder in 1997 / 1998 for the original Playstation. In the nineties Rare was one of the most prolific developer on Nintendo platforms. So it was quite a shock when in 1997 a small number of employees (game designer Oliver Davies; software engineers Oliver Norton, Steve Patrick, and Jeff Stafford; and two artists, Christopher Gage and Adrian Smith later replaced by Andrew Wood and Jemie Hemming) left the company to form a new studio called Eighth Wonder funded by no other than Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Nintendo main competitor at the time.

The deal had SCEE committed to publishing the new development house’s first three titles, with an option to pick up the next three. The first title in the work by this promising studio was an action/adventure game named Popcorn (also known as Short Fuses) that was similar to a 3D Bomberman clone but with puzzles and exploration elements.

Popcorn featured six world themes, each with three levels and after you beat the boss of each world you could progress to the next one and use the boss as a playable character (more than 10 playable characters including the hidden ones were planned such as a knight or a female ninja). The games was said to sport nice lighting effects, high resolution graphics (512×240) and a consistent framerate at 30 FPS.

At E3 1998 the game displayed under the Sunsoft booth so it is likely that Sunsoft would have been the american publisher. However as often happen with very publicized deals that involve many projects, Eighth Wonder are believed to have experienced a number of internal problems and, by 1999, the studio no longer existed relegating Popcorn into obscurity.

Vanished Powers [PSX PC – Cancelled]

Vanished Powers is a cancelled action adventure / RPG that was in development in 1995 / 1996 by Neon Software (creators of Tunnel B1) and it would have been published by Ocean for the original Playstation and PC. It was going to use an isometric 2D graphic style, with prerendered backgrounds and lots of FMVs, along with more than 70 (weird) characters, modeled with Silicon Graphics. In the end the Vanished Powers was never released, but we dont know the reasons behind this decision.

Fallout [Playstation – Cancelled]

Fallout is a computer RPG produced by Tim Cain, developed and published by Interplay in 1997. The game has a post-apocalyptic setting in the mid-22nd century, featuring an alternate history which deviates some time after World War II, where technology, politics and culture followed a different course. [Info from Wikipedia]

A Fallout top-down shooter for the original PlayStation was in development at Interplay at one point. It was canceled after about 3-4 months of pre-production and early prototyping. The PlayStation port of another notable cRPG published by Interplay, Baldur’s Gate, was similarly canceled, although in a near complete state. As we can see, in the PlaystationMuseum, the game is in the Graveyard list.

Hogs Of War [PSX PC – Beta / Unused]

Hogs Of War is a great turn-based tactics game developed and released in 2000 by Infogrames for Playstation and PC. Below you can see an old trailer of this game with some beta stuff in it (thanks to HigherPlainGames for the video):

  • 0.41 the hud in top right of the corner is different than the final version also Frost Fight is different than the final version.
  • 0.48/0.53/1.34 Cratermass has different textures.
  • 1.21 Different viewfinder.
  • 1.41 FR feature (Cancelled)
  • 1.56 Beta pig animation.

Also (Thanks to VADIM567) Herman07 found 2 unused items:

An binocular (Removed because was useless due for the viewfinder on certain weapons) and a Retire Feature (like in Worms series).

Monstrous City [PSX – Cancelled]

Monstrous City is a cancelled action game that was in development by Northstar Studios for the Playstation. Players would have took the role of various monsters to destroy cities and kill humans, so we can assume that the game would have been similar to Rampage, but in 3D. Many kind of B-Movie monsters were designed for Monstrous City, including a Dracula-style occult monster, a giant robot with scads of energy beams, a bizarre mutant and a good old-fashioned Godzilla alike-dinosaur. Sadly the project was never finished, maybe because they were not able to find a publisher. A short preview of the game was published in NextGeneration magazine issue 13.
