Professional Sportscar Racing [PSX/PC – Beta?]

Update: thanks to Anonymous we found out that this game was released as “Sportscar GT” by Electronic Arts, that bought out Virgin Interactive. The screens below could still be different from the final game, so let us know if you see any differences!

In 1997 / 1998 Virgin Interactive were working on a new racing game for the original Playstation and PC know as “Professional Sportscar Racing” but it seems that the project was never released. The game was based on the license for the pro organization of the same name, a competition that was sponsored by the same Virgin Interactive.  Maybe Virgin had some problems with the PSR  license and the development could have been stopped. In the original press release we can read:

Fast driving, intensely competitive Grand Touring racing simulation game. For the player’s driving pleasure, all of the dream cars racing in the 1998 season of the Professional SportsCar championship will be authentically re-created including the internationally famous Panoz Esperante.

Firefly [PSX – Cancelled]

Firefly is a cancelled game that was in development by Pioneer LDC for the Playstation. There are not many info about this project, but a short article published in an old GameFan magazine (4 – 2) in which we can read that Firefly was going to be a mix between a platform, a shoot ’em up and a puzzle game. The description sounds interesting, but sadly Pioneer never released a anything like this on any console.

F-1 [PSX – Tech Demo]

Before the Playstation was released, Sony’s Epic team (Epic Sony Record?) created a tech demo with F-1 cars racing in a city street, to show some of the graphic power of their new 32 Bit console. Today this graphic could look silly, but for it’s time it was really nice. In the end, Epic never developed any real game for the Playstation. Celine was able to find a screenshot of this tech demo in Edge issue 5.

Jet Moto (Jet Rider) [PSX – Beta]

Jet Moto (aka Jet Rider in Europe) is a futuristic racing game developed by SingleTrac and published in 1996 by Sony for the PlayStation and PC. As we can read on Wikipedia, the developers chose to create jet motos instead of wheeled motorcycles due to concerns over polygon limitations.

Developers originally intended for players to be permanently out of a race when falling far off a track, however they came to realize that it was not fun for players “to be forced to go slow or suffer an instant defeat. Also, a set of courses set in a stadium were dropped as SingleTrac felt it did not fit the theme of the game.

In the gallery below you can see a series of screenshots from a Jet Moto beta, about 40% complete, with different models and backgrounds. Check the video from the final version for a comparison!

Death Race [Playstation, Saturn – Cancelled]

Death Race is a cancelled 3D racing game developed by Ocean Software for Playstation and Saturn, scheduled for the end of ’96 but that doesn’t seem to ever been released. The game was set in a distant future where the most popular show is Death Race. The game was a mix between the racing part (10 courses were available to challenge violent opposition) and exploration on foot  in a 3D environment.
