Citizen X [Sega CD – Cancelled]

Citizen X is a cancelled side-scrolling action game, made by Digital Pictures, which was supposed to be released for the Sega Mega Cd in 1993. Like many other titles for the ill-fated add-on, it featured many clumsy FMV cutscenes. The gameplay was even less exciting, because of the very limited moveset available for the main character and the repetitive locations. An almost complete beta of Citizen, missing just one of the videos, was commercially distribuited by Good Deal Games in 2002.

After Burner [X360 – Concept]

In 2005 Juice Games had an idea to develope a “next gen” Flight simulator / Shooter, probably for the soon-to-be released Xbox 360. To easily find a publisher and funds they tried to pitch their flight project to Sega, as new game in the After Burner series,  but without any success. As the After Burner pitch was unsuccessful, Juice Games decided to use an original IP for their Flight Shooter and the project became Stormbirds for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In the end Stormbirds was canned by THQ, Juice Games’ publisher.

Only few concept arts remain to preserve the existence of this project.

Brett Hull NHL Hockey [Jaguar – Beta / Unreleased]

Brett Hull NHL Hockey was developed in 1994 by Accolade Inc. and Ringler Studios. There was going to be a version for both the cartridge and Jaguar CD add-on although they were never released in the Jaguar’s lifetime. To avoid licensing issues the name of the proto has been changed and released as “Jaguar Hockey”. This game became legendary to have the longest loading times out of all the other Jaguar CD games.

As we can read from the description of the video in viMasterJag’s Youtube Channel:

Brett Hull NHL Hockey is another unfinished game for the Atari Jaguar. We’ve been lucky to have it released in cartridge form, though, by B&C Computervisions.

Differences from this to the cartridge version include, but are not limited to, bug-fixes as well as full-motion-video cut-scenes.

Hirelings [PS2 PC – Cancelled]

Hirelings is a cancelled fantasy platform game that was in development in 2000 by Cinematix Studios for the Playstation 2 and PC. As we can read on MobyGames, Cinematix was founded by Jong Yoon and Ben Cooley in 1993, and has released only two PC games: Total Mayhem (Published by Domark in 1996), and Revenant (Published by Eidos Interactive in 1999). After those titles, the studio was working on Hirelings and Renegade Zero, but neither of them was ever released. Cinematix had to close down after a while, probably for economic issues.

Thanks to derboo we were able to preserve some images from the game, found in Korean mag PC Power Zine (October 2000 issue) and from Cinematix’s old website though the Wayback Machine.

Street Fighter 2 [Arcade – Concept]

Developed by Capcom, Street Fighter II was released in 1991 as a sequel to the original 1987 Street Fighter and it’s credited for starting the fighting game boom during the 1990s. Its success led to the production of a series of updated versions, each offering additional features and characters over previous versions, as well as several home versions. The roster initially included Ryu and Ken plus six new characters from different nationalities. [Info from Wikipedia]

In EGM issue #33 there was an interesting article with some early character designs, that show different versions of Vega (Balrog), Chun Li and Blanka.
