Converse Hardcore Hoops [Cancelled]

Converse Hardcore Hoops  (also know as Converse City Ball Tour) is a cancelled basketball game that was in development by Virgin Interactive Entertainment for the Genesis / Mega Drive, Super Nintendo, Playstation and Saturn. It was based on street basketball and there were 10 cities in which to play in 3vs3 half court matches. Converse Hardcore Hoops was shown at E3 1995 but after a while it vanished from release lists and it was never released on any console.

It’s unknown if the project was somehow connected to the Converse brand of shoes or  why the game was cancelled. Celine was able to find some screens from magazines GamePro #72 and CD Consoles #8.

Burning Fists [Sega Mega CD – Cancelled]

Burning Fist (also known as Force Striker in its early alpha build) is a cancelled fighting game that was in development in 1994 by Sega of Japan for the Mega CD. As we can read at Sega Base, both the Force Striker alpha and the Burning Fists beta were leaked rom a former SoJ employee and sold on eBay some years ago. Burning Fist was never officially released, but in 2006 those alpha / beta builds were re-sold to Good Deal Games.

GDG worked in collaboration with J2 Games to finish Burning Fist and published it in their online shop. In an interview that Sega 16 had with GDG’s Michael Thomasson we read that

The game was about 80% complete. It was missing the final boss, the full-motion video was running at about four frames per second, had several bugs, the menu system was corrupt, and the one-player computer artificial intelligence was quite, well, stupid. We were able to get the FMV running at a respectable rate […]. We also completely reworked the menu system. We made the artificial intelligence on the one-player game a decent opponent.

In the gallery below you can check some screenshots from the game and a scan that Celine found in EGM #49.

Extreme Wakeboarding [PS2 – Cancelled]

Extreme Wakeboarding is a cancelled sport game that was in development in 2002 by Wild Child Studios for the Playstation 2. As we can read on Wikipedia, Wakeboarding is a surface water sport which involves riding a wakeboard over the surface of a body of water. The rider is usually towed behind a motorboat and the sport was developed from a combination of water skiing, snow boarding and surfing techniques. The gameplay would have been probably similar to the Tony Hawks’ skateboard games, but “on rails” as the player needs to follow the motorboat.

Extreme Wakeboarding was never released, maybe because Wild Child Studios did not find a publisher interested in the project. Sometime later the studio had to close down. Another wakeboarding game, Stomped Wakeboarding, was in development by Indie Built (aka Microsoft’s Salt Lake Games Studio) for the XBOX, but it was cancelled too.

Conan [PSP – Cancelled]

Conan is a cancelled action game that was in development in 2006 by Planet Moon Studios for the PSP. There are not many info available on the project, it seems that they created a playable prototype to show to various publishers, but in the end they did not find one interested in the game. The development of Conan was stopped and only few screens remain in the gallery below, to preserve its existence.

I:5 (Insomniac) [PS2 – Cancelled]

Codename I:5 (aka “Girl with a stick”) is a cancelled game that was in development by Insomniac Games, between Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000) and Ratchet & Clank (2002). As the name of the project suggests, it was going to be the 5th game from Insomniac studio, but after some time they decided to stop the works on it, as it was not much fun to play. I:5 was never officially announced, but  they talked about it in one of their “The Full Moon Show” video podcasts, in which they even shown some footage of the prototype. The game was meant to be an action adventure / RPG, inspired by Zelda / Tomb Raider, in wich the main character was a girl with a stick as a weapon and magic powers, exploring a fantasy /prehistoric world. Huge props to Insomniac for sharing some info on their lost game!
