Ninja Gaiden [Mega Drive / Genesis – Beta / Cancelled]

md_ng

This is Ninja Gaiden for the Genesis. It is (in theory) a conversion of the 1988 coin-op, but basically the only thing that it is similar to the original is the HUD, because everything else was completely reworked. It was never released (even if some websites claims the opposite) in any region, and since it is available online and we can play it, it is not hard to understand why. Apart from being still bug-filled, it is one of the worst beat’em up on the console, featuring a really bad graphic engine even for the time (1992), a moveset pratically inexistent and some of the most less creative enemies ever.

For the Frog the Bell Tolls Remake [GBC – Cancelled]

Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) was an Adventure / Action RPG developed by  Nintendo and Intelligent Systems, released  (only in Japan) in 1992 for the original Gameboy. In 2002 a Game boy Color remake was announced by Nintendo, but it was soon cancelled, probably because of the release of the new Gameboy Advanced, that killed the final batch of GBC games. Thanks to Robert Seddon that has found some screens from this vanished GBC remake on GamesTM magazine #54, we can finally see the game in all its (cancelled) glory.

Update: It seems that these screens were just mockups made by fans of the original game and not from the remake. A GBC remake was really announced, but at this time there are still not any “official” screens from the project.

Thanks to Ita for the direct-feed screens and the informations!

Day of the Tentacle [PC – Beta]

dayoftentaclelogo.jpg

In the website of ATMachine we can read an interesting series of articles about the old Lucas Arts adventures and between them, we can even find a wonderfull page with informations and screens for the beta version of Day of the Tentacle! In those images we can see different animations and unused items. Also, as we can read on Wikipedia, the game was originally intended to resemble Maniac Mansion more closely, with the player allowed to choose from among six characters who would have included a male poet named Chester, a female hippie named Moonglow described as “a New Age girl with sandals”, and Razor from the original game. This idea was dropped in preproduction to simplify the project. The art created for the character of Chester was eventually adapted for the characters of the sculptor twins in the final game.

Thanks to Celine for the contribution!

Mortal Kombat [MD/G – Beta]

md_mk

MathUser has made us notice that he has posted lots of scans with beta and cancelled games in the Hidden Palace Forum and between those, there are these screens from an early version of Mortal Kombat for the Genesis, with a strange color palette and a exhibition mode that was removed in the final version. Thanks to MathUser and sorry for the delay!

Also in a video documentary that you can see below, Ed Boon talks about the early development of the game, with some interesting unseen info!
